Dragonstone (Ohko) is one of the most popular types of rock in the aquascaping scene - and for good reason. With its uniquely jagged structure, striking holes and warm color nuances ranging from grey and beige to reddish and brownish tones, this natural stone gives every aquarium a powerful yet organic look. The visual depth and naturalness that dragon stone brings to the layout make it the ideal design element for lovers of Asian or near-natural aquascapes.
Origin and characteristics
Dragonstone originally comes from Asian mountain regions and is characterized by its porous, highly textured surface. The furrowed depressions and sometimes dramatic-looking indentations are reminiscent of rugged rocky landscapes or fossilized roots - hence the name “dragon stone”, which is reminiscent of the mythological skin of a dragon. Despite its robust appearance, the rock is comparatively light, which makes it easier to handle in the aquarium. In addition, there are no calcareous components, which means that dragon stone generally does not harden the water and can also be used in sensitive plant aquariums without any problems.
Design possibilities with dragon stone
Dragon stone is a true all-rounder in terms of layout and can be used in a wide variety of ways, e.g. as natural mountain and rock landscapes. Thanks to its jagged structure, the dragon stone is ideal for recreating miniature mountains. Alpine landscapes, gorges or canyon-like formations can be created by cleverly stacking and turning the stones. Moss and perching plants such as Anubias or Bucephalandra can be placed in the recesses, giving the layout a weathered, naturally overgrown appearance.

Processing and tips
When designing with dragon stone, it is advisable to rinse the stones thoroughly before inserting them to remove loose particles and dust. Due to its porous structure, dust can collect in the gaps. The stones can also be broken up into smaller fragments using a hammer and chisel - ideal for detailed work or as a creative link between larger formations.
