Aquatic snails mostly feed on detritus and dead plant parts, but also on algae growth on the glass, rocks, driftwood and so on. They are good algae eaters and scavenge for leftovers, for this reason they are considered the "sanitary police" of the aquarium. Should one of the other aquarium pets have died, most aquarium snails will gladly do away with the carcass.

There are very few predatory snails like for example the Assassin Snail … it feeds on other live snails, and some aquarium enthusiasts just love it as the Assassin Snail keeps pest snails like bladder snails, ramshorn snails and pond snails in check.

A good aquarium snail food should mainly be vegetarian. Algae and various vegetables add minerals, trace elements, herbs and vitamins provide the snail with everything it needs for a stable, beautiful shell, a good digestion and overall vitality.
