Tap water sometimes contains unfortunately heavy metals from the leads, even if only in very low concentrations, such as Lead or Copper or even chlorine additive.

These materials are for invertebrates such as Shrimp and snails fatal even in very low concentrations and also the bacteria and the entire microbiology usually takes considerable damage, or may not develop properly. For the aquatic plants, chlorine is also not well tolerated, since it can lead to damage in photosynthesis.

Water conditioner usually bind and neutralized such substances permanently and make them therefore harmless. With the next water change, this compounds are flushed out of the Aquarium, and so brought about a constant water quality.
